The objective of this study is to examine lean production and its effects on general working conditions and occupational health and safety. Lean production is considered either as a humane way of production with positive effects on workers or to have negative consequences for workers' and their job quality. This study investigates the increasing workload of the workers as a result of the unlimited performance demands of lean production as the first hypothesis. Secondly, there is the question of whether lean production provides a reduction in the number of occupational accidents because of the fact that occupational accidents are seen as waste, thus eliminated at all costs. The last hypothesis which will be assessed is that the number of occupational diseases increases after the implementation of lean production. To that end, a case study was carried out in an automotive plant by a qualitative research method using tools of observation, document analysis, in depth interview and structured interview. As a conclusion, the implementation of lean production in a plant in automotive industry has resulted in the reduction of the occupational accidents and improvement of ergonomic conditions even though the main incentive for these improvements is to reduce the wastes and costs and to increase the profitability and competitiveness. Based on the interviews, workers do not consider that their workload is increased after the implementation of lean production. Besides, workers feel work autonomy and job satisfaction. They also claim that they do not feel job stress in contrast to the literature.

Investigation of the preservice science teachers̕ views on science technology and society issues
Kahyaoğlu, Elvan; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2004)
The aim of this study is to investigate the views of preservice science teachers on science-technology-society, STS, issue. A total of 176 preservice science teachers participated in the study. A 26-item أViews on Science-Technology-Society (VOSTS)ؤ instrument, translated and adapted into Turkish, were utilized to assess participants̕ views on STS. The VOSTS (Aikenhead, Ryan and Fleming, 1989) is a pool of 114 empirically developed multiple-choice items with nine categories. In order to understand participa...
Application of vapex process for light crude oil
Kök, Mustafa Verşan; Akın, Serhat (Informa UK Limited, 2008-01-01)
The objective of this study is to investigate the applicability of Vapex process on Garzan crude oil. Experiments were performed with Hele-Shaw cell using two different solvents (propane and butane) at three different injection rates (20,40, and 80ml/min). For both Vapex solvents, oil production rates increased with injection rates for Garzan crude oil. Instantaneous asphaltene rate for Garzan oil showed fluctuated performance with propane solvent. Butane showed almost constant degree of asphaltene precipit...
A proposed model of safety climate: Contributing factors and consequences
Yucebilgic, Harika; Sümer, Hayriye Canan (2008-06-01)
The aim of the present study was to propose a model on safety climate by investigating the relationship between safety climate perceptions of employees and their safety-related behaviors in the workplace. Additionally, effects of fatalism views and risk taking/sensation seeking tendencies on safe behaviors were analyzed. The possible moderating effects of these variables on safety climate-safe behavior relationship were also investigated. A total of 185 blue-collar employees working in a manufacturing firm ...
The Granger-causality between health care expenditure and output: a panel data approach
Erdil, Erkan (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
This study investigates the Granger-causality relationship between real per capita GDP and real per capita health care expenditure by employing a large macro panel data set with a VAR representation. The findings verify that the dominant type of Granger-causality is bidirectional. In instances that we found one-way causality, the pattern is not homogenous: Our analyses show that one-way causality generally runs from income to health in low- and middle-income countries whereas the reverse holds for high-inco...
The causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth
Çevirgen, Banu; Erdil, Erkan; Department of Economics (2008)
The causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth has been a controversial subject of the empirical literature. However, there is no common consensus neither on the existence nor on the direction of the causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth. The purpose of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between energy consumption and economic growth using a consistent data set. Recently developed Granger causality tests in panel data models are used to ...
