Coastal regions are very important because they provide a lot of resources and benefits for all the humankind. Coastal defense structures protect coastal regions from wave attacks. However, the cost of construction such coastal defense structures are very high and need big investments. Hence, to reach the optimum design and minimize the risk of failure has vital importance during the design stage of these structures. Model studies are the most effective tool in optimizing the design of these structures. Rubble mound coastal defense structures were constructed with assembly of different sizes of armor stones and front slopes. Rubble mound coastal defense structures were designed by Van der Meer‟s approach and the stability of the cross sections were tested on the models constructed with a scale of 1:33.485 in the Coastal and Harbor v Engineering Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, Middle East Technical University. Results of the model studies showed that structures with steep slopes were damaged more than structures with mild slopes and the stability of the structures were directly affected by the armor stone sizes. In the model studies, different cross sections were tested for stability to obtain the cumulative damages under severe storm conditions. These cumulative damages, which are obtained by stone count method, are converted to the damage parameters, Sd, to compare with the existing studies. It was observed that the results of the stability formulae of Van der Meer for shallow water were very consistent with the results of model studies as they were designed according to Van der Meer approach.

Water circulation and yacht carrying capacity of Fethiye Bay
Dzabic, Miran; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2012)
Coastal regions provide a lot of resources and benefits for all the humankind. For economic growth, these resources are needed. On the other hand, coastal resources should be maintained and preserved in some limits. Sustainable development is aimed to set a balance between economic growth and preserving the nature. Determination of the yacht carrying capacity is a major step for sustainable development. In this thesis study wind-induced water circulation in semi-enclosed basins are carried out in order to r...
A case study on the stability of berm type coastal defense structures
Fışkın, Gökçe; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
Coastal defense structures have primary importance from obtainabilty of resources and benefits served by the coastal regions point of view. However, the construction of coastal defense structures demand a high amount of investment. Therefore, in order to reduce the risk of collapse of these structures, model studies should be carried during the design process. In this study, model investigations were carried out on Eastern Black Sea Highway Project regarding the serviceability and damage thus stability para...
Comparison of numerical models and application to tropical cyclone Dorian
Ömeroğlu, Gökçe; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Department of Civil Engineering (2021-6-30)
Coasts are important areas where the vast majority of the world's population lives, have important natural resources and ecosystems, and provide socio-economic opportunities for societies. However, coastal areas are under threat due to different natural disasters such as storms, tsunamis and floods that cause loss of life and property. With the rapid development of hardware and software technologies, many programs that play an important role in the assessment of the natural disasters have achieved to perfor...
A case study on the submerged berm type coastal defense structures
Özler, Başar; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2004)
Coastal defense structures are built in order to protect valuable coastal regions from the destructive effects of the waves. Due to the cost of coastal defense structures and the economical potential of the coastal regions, failure of such structures could cause loss of high amounts of investment. Therefore in the design and construction of coastal structures, it is of vital importance to achieve an optimum design which is not neither underdesigned nor overdesigned. In this study, Submerged Berm type coasta...
AN ANALYSIS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL CHEMISTRY CURRICULUM IN TERMS OF EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: A CASE FROM TURKEY
Turkmen, C.; Teksöz, Gaye; Boz, Yezdan (2017-01-01)
Sustainable development (SD) has been one of the overarching objectives of the United Nations. Member countries and stakeholders are reorienting education at all levels of the system to overcome the environmental, social and economic challenges that the world faces, and to achieve a sustainable future. There has been a strong increase in the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into secondary education; however, research is needed to assess the relevance of the curriculum to meet the e...
