Synthesis and characterization of polypropylene based ion-exchange resin

Ecevit, Safiye Tuba
The synthesis of ion-exchange resin which can be used in various separation and chemical purposes, such as diffusion dialysis, electro dialysis, electrolysis and fuel cells has of considerable interest. For all these applications, the interactions of the ionic groups and the resulted morphologies are critical for establishing the unique properties. Considerable researches have been continued to understand the microstructure of these materials. The aim of this study is to synthesize polypropylene (PP) based ion exchange resins and to investigate their ion-exchange properties. In the first part of this study polypropylene was functionalized by grafting maleic anhydride onto the polypropylene and the product was characterized by ATR. The effect of maleic anhydride introduced to the grafting medium and the effect of the radical initiator on the maleic anhydride content of the MA-g-PP samples were investigated. In the second part, neutralization of the MA-g-PP samples with Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions and peroxide cross-linking of neutralized MA-g-PP samples were performed. Characterization of the neutralized MA-g-PP samples were performed by ATR and SEM-EDX. In the last part of the study, ion exchange properties of MA-g-PP resins towards Cu2+, Co2+, Cd2+, Pb2+ and Fe3+ ions at different pHs were investigated by batch equilibrium method. Rate of metal uptake, concentration effect on the metal uptake and regeneration of the MA-g-PP samples were also examined.

Synthesis, characterization, and polymerization of polyether bridged thiophene and aniline derivatives
Tirkeş, Seha; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
New compounds consisting of 3-thienyl and aniline units linked by polyether bridges have been synthesized and their electrochemical polymerization was performed via constant potential electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry. In the case of 3-thienyl derivatives two compounds, 1,12-di-3-thienyl-2,5,8,11-tetraoxadodecane (MI) and 1,15-di-3-thienyl-2,5,8,11,14-pentaoxapentadecane (MII) were synthesized utilizing literature methods and their corresponding polymers, poly(I) and poly(II) were prepared in an electroly...
Synthesis and characterization of polypyrrole nanoparticles and their nanocomposites with polypropylene
Baytekin, Sevil; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
Conducting polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles were synthesized via microemulsion polymerization system. The characterization of PPy nanoparticles was done by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing of polypyrrole with polypropylene (PP) and processed with injection molding. The amount of PPy in nanocomposites varied in the range of 1-20% by weight. The effect of PPy nanoparticles on mechanical, electrical properties and ...
Synthesis and characterization of polythiophene/montmorillonite and polythiophene/polypropylene composites
Dülgerbaki, Çiğdem; Küçükyavuz, Zuhal; Department of Chemistry (2006)
In this study, polythiophene(PTP)/montmorillonite(MMT) nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ intercalative polymerization and chemical oxidative polymerization. In in situ intercalative polymerization method, composites containing 90 and 95% MMT were prepared. In chemical oxidative polymerization method, a series of composites ranging from 1 to 15% by weight MMT were synthesized. Thermal and morphological properties of samples were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Thermal Gravim...
Synthesis and characterization of epoxy-acrylate vinylester resin and network structure
Zeytin Derin, Çiğdem; Usanmaz, Ali; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2008)
Vinylesters are termosets resins that have reactive double bond at the chain ends. They are produced by the reaction of various epoxies and acrylic acids by step growth polymerization. Vinylester chains are oligomers with molecular weight from 600 to 1200 g/mol. The resin viscosity is very high; therefore, diluent is used for easy application. The generally used diluent is styrene with, reactive double bonds to form a crosslink between the chains. The diluted resin viscosities are between 200 2000 cps. Per...
Syntheses of benzotriazole bearing donor acceptor type random copolymers for full visible light absorption
Öktem, Gözde; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2011)
The synthesis and preliminary optoelectronic properties of a series of donor-acceptor (DA) type polymers differing by the acceptor units in the polymer backbone were investigated. Polymers CoP1, CoP2 and CoP3 were designed to yield alternating DA segments with randomly distributed different acceptor units along polymer backbone. The combination of neutral state red colored and neutral state green colored materials resulted in different neutral state colors with respect to their additional acceptor unit. 5,8...
