A VALIDATION STUDY OF GOAL ORIENTATIONS AND SELF-EFFICACY SCALES

2010-12-01
Acarlar, Gizem
Bilgiç, Reyhan
The aim of the current study was to investigate the validity and reliability of goal orientation and self-efficacy scales. The scales were administered to 264 university students (154 from engineering departments, 110 from business administration). Two samples were used. In the first sample, the original factor model was tested with confirmatory factor analysis. In the second sample, the Turkish versions of the scales were factor analyzed. Principal components analysis resulted in three components for the Goal Orientation scale: Learning goal orientation, Performance-prove goal orientation, and Performance-avoid goal orientation. The Self-efficacy scale had one factor as expected. Cronbach's alpha coefficients were satisfactory. The results did not fully support the use of current Turkish versions of the scales. Results of the studies are discussed along with the strengths and limitations of the study and suggestions for further development of the scales.

A comparison of written feedback and written plus verbal feedback methods in performance management
Erdemli, Cigdem; Somer, H. Canan; Bilgiç, Reyhan (2007-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two different modes of feedback on the reactions of supervisors (raters) and subordinates (ratees) and also on the performance of the subordinates. Using a quasi-experimental design, 77 supervisors giving feedback and 71 subordinates receiving feedback participated in the study. Supervisors were assigned to either Written Plus Verbal Feedback Condition or Verbal Feedback Condition. After receiving a general performance appraisal training and a feedback...
A communicative competence perspective on difficulties l2 reading
Bayraktar, Hasan; Bear, Joshua; Department of English Language Teaching (2005)
The primary objective of this study was to investigate the reading difficulties (problems) of Freshman EFL students attending the Department of Foreign Language Education at Middle East Technical University. The study attempted to integrate notions of strategic, linguistic, discourse and sociolinguistic competence into the construct of reading: a first approximation at integrating and applying a model of reading ability to a model of communicative language ability. To examine the reading difficulties and fa...
An investigation of the neural correlates of purchase behavior through fNIRS
Çakır, Murat Perit; Girisken, Yener; Yurdakul, Dicle (2018-01-01)
Purpose This study aims to explore the plausibility of the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) methodology for neuromarketing applications and develop a neurophysiologically-informed model of purchasing behavior based on fNIRS measurements.
An Investigation of the Relationship between Motivation and Academic Achievement of Pre-service Chemistry Teachers
Eymur, Guluzar; Geban, Ömer (2011-07-01)
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between academic achievement and motivation. In addition, motivational differences between gender and year level were investigated. Pre-service chemistry teachers (n=168) completed the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) which was prepared by Vallerend (1992) as an intrument. The AMS consisted of 28 Likert-type scale questions related to intrinsic motivation (to know, toward accomplishment, and to experience stimulation), extrinsic motivation (ident...
The Heuristic role of questions in the formation of research programmes: Copernicus’s heliocentric system
Altuğ, Sezen; Bağçe, Samet; Department of Philosophy (2016)
The aim of this thesis is to develop a critical view about the notion of the heuristic in Lakatos’s methodology of research programmes. The heuristic is tried to be sterilized from its defects with an insight derived from different forms of theories dealing with questions. For that reason, a short survey which includes Socratic dialogues, Hintikka’s theory of interrogative games, van Fraassen’s theory of why-questions, and Laudan’s analogy between science and problem-solving activity is introduced. As a res...
