In this study, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) and polyamide-6 (PA6) were blended in the presence of an olefin-based compatibilizer and organoclays. The effects of ABS to PA6 ratio, clay content, and screw speed of the microcompounder were examined by performing morphological (i.e., XRD, SEM, and TEM) and tensile tests. The average aspect ratio of the clay platelets after processing was obtained by applying semiautomatic image analysis method. SEM analysis showed that addition of the compatibilizers to the ABS/PA6 blend system resulted in a decrease in diameter of dispersed phase when one of the phases was continuous. The addition of 5 wt% compatibilizer altered the dispersed morphology to cocontinuous morphology when the weight percentage of ABS was equal to that of PA6. The results of XRD analysis implied that clays were exfoliated in the presence of PA6. It was observed in TEM micrographs that clays were selectively dispersed in PA6 phase. Aspect ratio of the platelets increased as the PA6 content increased. Moduli of the nanocomposites were improved by enriching blend with PA6 and increasing screw speed.

Fused structures in the polymer backbone to investigate the photovoltaic and electrochromic properties of donoracceptor-type conjugated polymers
CEVHER, ŞEVKİ CAN; UNLU, Naime Akbasoglu; OZELCAGLAYAN, Ali Can; APAYDIN, Dogukan Hazar; Udum, Yasemin Arslan; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Çırpan, Ali (Wiley, 2013-05-01)
In this study, two new benzotriazole (BTz) and dithienothiophene (DTT) containing conjugated polymers were synthesized. After successful characterizations of the monomers by proton-nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and carbon-NMR (13C NMR) techniques, poly(4-(dithieno[3, 2-b:2,3-d]thiophen-2-yl)-2-(2-octyldodecyl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3] triazole) P1 and poly(4-(5-(dithieno[3,2-b:2,3-d]thiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-(2-octyldodecyl)-7-(thiophen-2-yl)-2H-benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole) P2 were synthesized via a typica...
Short glass fiber reinforced ABS and ABS/PA6 composites: Processing and characterization
Ozkoc, G; Bayram, Göknur; Bayramli, E (Wiley, 2005-12-01)
In this study acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) terpolymer was reinforced with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APS)-treated short glass fibers (SGFs). The effects of SGF concentration and extrusion process conditions, such as the screw speed and barrel temperature profile, on the mechanical properties of the composites were examined. Increasing the SGF concentration in the ABS matrix from 10 wt% to 30 wt% resulted in improved tensile strength, tensile modulus and flexural modulus, but drastically lowered...
Interfacial Strength in Short Glass Fiber Reinforced Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene/Polyamide 6 Blends
Isitman, Nihat Ali; Aykol, Muratahan; Ozkoc, Guralp; Bayram, Göknur; Kaynak, Cevdet (Wiley, 2010-03-01)
The purpose of this study is to derive the apparent interfacial shear strength of short glass fiber reinforced acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene/polyamide 6 (PA6) blends with different PA6 contents. Tensile stress-strain curves and fiber length distributions are utilized within a continuum micromechanics approach which involves a unified parameter for fiber length distribution efficiency represented as a function of strain. The unique combination of predicted micromechanical parameters is capable of accuratel...
Silafluorene-based polymers for electrochromic and polymer solar cell applications
ERLIK, Ozan; UNLU, Naime A.; HIZALAN, Gonul; HACIOGLU, Serife O.; COMEZ, Seda; Yildiz, Esra D.; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Çırpan, Ali (Wiley, 2015-07-01)
In this study, four novel silafluorene (SiF) and benzotriazole (Btz) bearing conjugated polymers are synthesized. In the context of electrochemical and optical studies, these polymers are promising materials both for electrochromic device (ECD) and polymer solar cell (PSC) applications. All of the polymers are ambipolar (both p- and n-dopable) and multichromic. Electrochemistry experiments indicate that incorporation of selenophene instead of thiophene unit increases the HOMO energy level of the polymers. P...
Immobilization of invertase on a conducting polymer of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole
Tuncagil, Sevinc; Kiralp, Senem; Varls, Serhat; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Elsevier BV, 2008-03-01)
In this study, immobilization of invertase was achieved on a conducting polymer of 1-(4-nitrophenyl)-2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrole) (SNS (NO2)) via electrochemical polymerization. Kinetic parameters, maximum reaction rate (V-max) and substrate affinity (K-m), optimum temperature and pH, operational and storage stabilities of immobilized enzyme were determined.
