Objective: Epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) is suggested as a new cardiometabolic risk factor. Carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is a potential indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). We investigated the association of EATT with carotid IMT and cardiac functional changes in obese adolescents with MS. Methods: One hundred thirty-eight obese adolescents and 63 lean subjects were enrolled in the study. The obese subjects were divided into two subgroups based on the presence or absence of MS (MS group and non-MS group). All subjects underwent transthoracic echocardiographic examination for determination of left ventricular (LV) function, LV mass index (LVMI), and myocardial performance index (MPI). EATT and carotid IMT were also measured during echocardiography. Results: The average LVMI measurements were higher in both MS and non-MS obese patients in comparison with the lean children. The MS group had significantly higher LVMI measurements than the non-MS and lean groups (88.5 +/- 23.0, 67.5 +/- 24.8 g/m(2), and 62.4 +/- 18.2 g/m(2), respectively; p<0.01). Carotid IMT was higher in both the MS and non-MS obese patients in comparison with the lean group. The MS group had significantly higher carotid IMT measurements than the non-MS and lean groups (0.91 +/- 0.23, 0.78 +/- 0.18, and 0.52 +/- 0.08 mm, respectively; p<0.01). The EATT was also increased significantly in patients with MS compared to lean adolescents (7.42 +/- 1.55 vs. 4.28 +/- 0.79 mm; p=0.001). EATT was positively correlated with body mass index-SDS, waist circumference, fasting glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance, triglyceride levels, LV thickness, LVMI, and MPI in the MS obese group. EATT was the only independent predictor of carotid IMT in the multivariate analysis (beta= 0.69, p<0.001). Conclusion: The findings of the present study demonstrate a close relationship of EATT with carotid IMT and early cardiac dysfunction in obese adolescents with MS. Assessment of EATT and carotid IMT in routine echocardiographic examinations is suggested as a feasible and reliable method for the evaluation of obesity with MS and its related cardiovascular risks in children and adolescents.

Influence of duration of total breast-feeding on bone mineral density in a Turkish population: does the priority of risk factors differ from society to society?
Dursun, N; Akın, Serhat; Dursun, E; Sade, I; Korkusuz, F (2006-05-01)
Introduction: Despite numerous studies on risk factors for osteoporosis the effect of breast-feeding on bone mineral density (BMD) is unclear. In this study our aim was to determine the influence of total duration of breast-feeding on BMD, and subsequent risk of osteoporosis. Methods: A total of 1,486 postmenopausal women over the age of 40 were included in the study. Women with diseases or who were under drug treatments known to affect bone metabolism were excluded. The BMD of the lumbar spine and femoral ...
Investigation of Gender Effect on Obesity using a Model of Inbreed Obese Mouse Lines by Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging
Baloglu, Fatma Kucuk; Brockmann, Gudrun; Heise, Sebastian; Garip, Sebnem; Severcan, Feride (2015-01-27)
Lipid accumulation and storage of lipids in adipocytes during obesity cause structural and functional changes in adipose tissue conformation. The expansion of visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SCAT) adipose tissue mass in the body is the main reason of obesity and many times it results in disturbed lipid and glucose metabolism. Gender is an important factor for the research in obesity and other metabolic diseases because it leads to different fat distribution and the pathophysiology. This study aims to deter...
Validity and reliability of time management questionnaire
ALAY, SEMA; Koçak, Mehmet Settar (SAGE Publications, 2002-01-01)
the purpose of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the 49-item Diabetes Time Management Questionnaire (DTMQ) in individuals with diabetes. The (DTMQ) was designed to assess general time management skills and those specifically relevant to compliance to a diabetes healthcare regimen.
Relationship between prepatory information, preoperative and postoperative anxiety, and coping strategies in children and adolescents undergoing surgery.
Ercan, S; Öner Özkan, Bengi (Nova Science Publishers, 2005-01-01)
The aim of the study was to examine whether prepatory information before surgery was effective on adaptation to surgery process. The sample consisted of sixty children. Children were randomly divided into four groups. "Information group" was informed about the surgery process. "Information with mother group" was informed about the surgery procedure together with their mothers. "Interview group" did not receive any information, however, they were only interviewed on hospital environment and their hobbies or ...
Dietary selenium- and vitamin E-induced alterations in some rabbit tissues
Turan, B; Zaloglu, N; Koc, E; Saran, Y; Akkas, N (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 1997-09-01)
The present study was designed to investigate and compare the effects of dietary selenium (Se) and vitamin E on some physiological parameters and histological changes in liver, heart, and skin tissues, as well as the blood parameters and the related enzymes. Both sex young rabbits were fed with deficient (9.8 mu g/kg diet), adequate (225 mu g/kg diet), and rich (4.2 mg/kg diet) Se and vitamin E diets for 12-15 wk for this purpose As the plasma Se levels and the erythrocyte glutathione (GSH) peroxidase activ...
