Plasma polymer hexamethyldisiloxane, ethyldichlorophosphate and tris(butoxyethyl)phosphate modified polyacrylonitrile fibers were examined by FTIR, XRF, and SEM and the extend of flame retardancy introduced were checked. Certain levels of concentrations of flame‐retardant elements grafted or coated at the fiber surface during plasma treatment are believed to overcome some negative effects of a number of reactions that usually are concurrent with plasma polymerization, such as crosslinking.

Preparation and characterization of thermally stable organoclays and their use in polymer based nanocomposites
Abdallah, Wissam; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2010)
The present study was aimed at exploring the purification and modification of montmorillonite rich Turkish bentonites by organic salts and their subsequent effects on the morphology (X-diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy), melt flow index, mechanical (Tensile, Impact) and especially thermal stability (thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry) properties of polymer/organoclay nanocomposites with and without an elastomeric compatibilizer. The b...
Impact modified polyamide-organoclay nanocomposites
Işık, Işıl; Yılmazer, Ülkü; Department of Chemical Engineering (2007)
The effects of melt state compounding and addition order of ethylene-butyl acrylate-maleic anhydride (E-BA-MAH), ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate (E-GMA), ethylene-methyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate (E-MA-GMA) terpolymer and/or three types of organoclays (Cloisite® 15A, 25A and 30B) on morphology, thermal, mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of polyamide-6 are investigated. XRD patterns show that the interlayer spacing for Cloisite® 15A remained unchanged; however it increased for the organoclays ...
Novel donor-acceptor type polymers towards excellent neutral state green polymeric materials for realization of RGB based electrochromic device applications
Günbaş, Görkem Emrullah; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Department of Chemistry (2007)
Polymers having one of the three complementary colors (red, green, and blue) in the reduced state and high transmissivity in the oxidized state are key materials towards use in electrochromic devices and displays. Although many neutral state red and blue polymers were reported up to date, neutral state green polymeric materials appear to be limited. For potential application of electrochromic materials in display technologies, one should have to create the entire color spectrum and this can be only achieved...
THERMAL POLYMERIZATION OF BIS(TRIHALOPHENOXO)COPPER(II) COMPLEXES IN EXCESS DIMETHYLFORMAMIDE AND DIMETHYL-SULFOXIDE AS LIGANDS
KISAKUREK, D; SANLI, O (1989-08-01)
Thermal decomposition of bis(trihalophenoxo)copper(II) complexes was achieved at 50°C in dimethylformamide or dimethyl sulfoxide. The resulting polymers, poly(oxydihalophenylene)s (2), were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy and by differential scanning calorimetry. The molecular weights were determined by the vapour pressure method. Tribrominated phenol derivatives prefer 1,4‐substitution, whereas with trichlorophenol derivatives 1,2‐and 1,4‐substitutions take place at equal rates in ei...
Synthesis and characterization of a polybenzoxazine from a difunctional amine and a trifunctional phenol
Kaya, Şafak; Tinçer, Teoman; Department of Polymer Science and Technology (2009)
Synthesis of a polymer with benzoxazine units in the main chain backbone by a trifunctional phenol, a difunctional amine, and paraformaldehyde was achieved. Thermal, mechanical and spectroscopic characterization and the viscosity properties of the synthesized polymer were studied. In the first step of this study, a fast and feasible method for the synthesis of the benzoxazine precursors was developed since some methods mentioned in the literature about the synthesis of the benzoxazine derivatives last long ...
