Barriers to Walking Among College Students

2018-01-11
Pedestrian mobility and factors affection walking are main issues that need further attention in research studies. However, detecting complex relations among many factors is a rather challenging task, which cannot be observed by traditional pedestrian volume surveys or route choice analysis. Instead, an in-depth interview study was conducted among college students at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Campus, seeking information regarding their walking behavior on-campus as well as off-campus locations. The responses of 30 students revealed 217 keywords/phrases describing different situations. Further indexing of these situations using 67 factors grouped under 10 different categories showed high frequencies for some factors. Stray dogs and cobblestone pavement related barriers were commonly stated by the students, in addition to maintenance related ones. Beyond the METU campus related ones, time limitations, walk distance and walking at night were found to be repeated factors considered as barriers to walking.

Ergonomic evaluation of school busses
Özdemir, Pınar; Çilingir, Canan; Department of Industrial Engineering (2013)
In this study, perceived comfort and discomfort regarding school busses is assessed with the main focus on students. A total of 149 students and 38 drivers from a private school in Ankara was chosen participated in the study. Two different surveys were conducted on students and drivers separately, in order to assess perceived comfort and discomfort and suitability of the seat design features. Using SPSS Software to analyze the data, factors contributing to safety, driver distraction, perceived discomfort an...
Social marketing of post-pandemic teleworking to improve the well-being of white-collar workers in İstanbul

Compulsory commuting to work brings along many problems at the individual, societal and environmental levels, which have been well-documented in many studies. However, with the pandemic, more employees than ever before in human history have experienced telework. Likewise, the technological developments regarding telework have also gained momentum. Since the studies in the literature mostly belong to the pre-pandemic period, this thesis is separated from the literature because it is based on the unprecedente...
Pavement Crack Detection Using Unmanned Air Vehicles
Pekcan, Onur; Ersöz, Ahmet Bahaddin (null; 2016-01-10)
Pavement condition assessment is an essential piece of modern pavement management systems as rehabilitation strategies are planned based upon its outcomes. For proper evaluation of existing pavements, they must be continuously and effectively monitored using practical means. Conventionally, truck-based pavement monitoring systems have been in-use in assessing the remaining life of in-service pavements. Although such systems produce accurate results, their use can be expensive and data processing can be time...
