The effect of spacing between the rotors of a quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in hovering flight is investigated. Experiments are conducted to obtain a mathematical relation between the diameter of the rotor and gap distance between each rotor. Constraints such as the maximum thrust force and minimum energy consumption are imposed. Several rotors having different sizes are tested at various RPMs with a changing gap distances, and total thrust produced by four rotors is measured. The results are given and discussed.

Autonomous quadrotor flight with vision-based obstacle avoidance in virtual environment
Eresen, Aydin; Imamoglu, Nevrez; Efe, Mehmet Onder (Elsevier BV, 2012-01-01)
In this paper, vision-based autonomous flight with a quadrotor type unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is presented. Automatic detection of obstacles and junctions are achieved by the use of optical flow velocities. Variation in the optical flow is used to determine the reference yaw angle. Path to be followed is generated autonomously and the path following process is achieved via a PID controller operating as the low level control scheme. Proposed method is tested in the Google Earth (R) virtual environment fo...
Experimental Investigation of Aerodynamics of Flapping-Wing Micro-Air-Vehicle by Force and Flow-Field Measurements
Deng, Shuanghou; Perçin, Mustafa; van Oudheusden, Bas (2016-02-01)
This study explores the aerodynamic characteristics of a flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle (MAV) in hovering configuration by means of force and flowfield measurements. The effects of flapping frequency and wing geometry on force generation were examined using a miniature six-component force sensor. Additional high-speed imaging allowed identification of the notable different deformation characteristics of the flexible wings under vacuum condition in comparison to their behavior in air, illustrating the re...
Experimental Investigation of Viscous Flow Normal to NACA 0012 Airfoil at low Reynolds Numbers
Gunaydınoglu, Erkan; Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (null; 2018-07-11)
The low Reynolds number aerodynamics at high angle of attack is crucial for the design of unmanned aerial vehicles and wind turbine blades. The current study aims to enhance the insight on the near wake of airfoils normal to free stream. The near wake structure on a NACA 0012 airfoil normal to free-stream is measured with particle image velocimetry in the range of Reynolds number 7000 to 20000. The velocity and vorticity fields of the wake structures are studied and further analysis with Proper Orthogonal D...
Design and analysis of a mode-switching micro unmanned aerial vehicle
Cakici, Ferit; Leblebicioğlu, Mehmet Kemal (SAGE Publications, 2016-12-01)
In this study, design and analysis of a mode-switching vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with level flight capability is considered. The design of the platform includes both multirotor and fixed-wing (FW) conventional airplane structures; therefore named as VTOL-FW. The aircraft is modeled using aerodynamical principles including post-stall conditions. Trim conditions are obtained by solving constrained optimization problems. Linear analysis techniques are utilized for trim ...
NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS OF FLAPPING MOTION IN HOVER. APPLICATION TO MICRO AIR VEHICLES.
Kurtuluş, Dilek Funda (2005-06-01)
The aerodynamics phenomena of flapping motion in hover are considered in view of the future Micro Air Vehicle applications. The aim of this work is to characterize the vortex dynamics generated by the wing in motion using direct numerical simulation and experimental analysis then to propose a simplified analytical model for prediction of the forces in order to optimize the parameters of the motion leading to maximum force. A great number of cases are investigated corresponding to different angles of a...
