REFUNCTIONING PROPOSALS OF AIRPORTS AND AVIATION BUILDINGS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE: CASE OF ISTANBUL ATATURK AIRPORT

Uraz, Can
Progress and expansion on the aviation industry in the recent times force airports and aviation buildings to either be improved or be abandoned. Considering the latest statistics of vacant airports and different effects emerging lately all over the world, it can be predicted that the pressure on the physical spaces of aviation will increasingly continue. However, since “airport” as a new typology appearing from the early 20th century could satisfy the expectations of the industry up to recent past, abandonment of aviation facilities had not been common. On the other hand, airports and aviation buildings come to the forefront as significant research topics in terms of conservation and re-use potentials when all their values taken into account. The aim of this thesis is to increase the awareness about the abandoned airport facilities while describing them as industrial heritage and to assess Istanbul Atatürk Airport, which was abandoned recently, from this perspective. Within this framework, substantial refunctioned airports with different features, which are Berlin Tempelhof Airport, Paris Le-Bourget Airport, Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport and Athens Ellinikon Airport are examined for their particular refunctioning scenarios and abandonment processes. In the light of this comparative research, potential refunctioning scenarios for the Atatürk Airport are discussed.

Air passenger demand forecasting for planned airports, case study : Zafer and Or-gi airports in Turkey
Yazıcı, Rıza Onur; Acar, Soner Osman; Gökdalay, Meriç; Department of Civil Engineering (2011)
The economic evaluation of a new airport investment requires the use of estimated future air passenger demand.Today it is well known that air passenger demand is basicly dependent on various socioeconomic factors of the country and the region where the planned airport would serve. This study is focused on estimating the future air passenger demand for planned airports in Turkey where the historical air passsenger data is not available. For these purposses, neural networks and multi-linear regression were use...
Assessment of psychosocial risk factors among air traffic controllers
Altunok, Gizem; Demirel, Nuray; Department of Occupational Health and Safety (2019)
Impeccable air traffic controlling is of vital importance for air traffic management and aviation safety. Air traffic controllers, who provide advisory services to the aircraft in airspace and on the ground, usually face high level of psychological risk factors due to essence of the work. Although psychosocial risk factors among air traffic controllers have been investigated since air traffic control services were born by the first decade of the twentieth century, there is still need for further studies in ...
Evaluation of the pricing preferences and value of time for high speed rail (HSR) users in Turkey
Tüydeş Yaman, Hediye; Dalkıç Melek, Gülçin (2019-01-01)
High Speed Rail (HSR), a new intercity passenger mode in Turkey, has high travel time reduction potential and competes against both road and air travel modes. A survey among the current HSR users showed that pricing at intercity bus ticket level is a factor increasing the preferability of HSR. If HSR ticket price is more than bus ticket price, 60 0 of the HSR users stated to prefer HSR, while only 40 0 stated preference, if HSR is priced equal to air ticket prices. Binary logit models developed in the study...
Havacılık Nöroergonomisinde Optik Beyin Görüntüleme Uygulamaları

Vehicle routing for aerial surveillance with a homogeneous fleet
Tarakçı, Koray; Karasakal, Esra; Karasakal, Orhan; Department of Industrial Engineering (2021-12-10)
In this study, we develop models and solution approaches for planning the surveillance mission of a homogeneous fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Predefined areas are to be observed while satisfying a minimum probability of target detection. Areas are assumed to be rectangular and discrete. UAVs with electro-optical sensors take off from a base and fly through predefined routes. The endurance of UAVs is limited by the maximum flight distance. The proposed models minimize the total travel distance of...
