The influence of digital technologies on the interaction of design and manufacturing processes
Çıngı, Güney; Ünay, Ali İhsan; Department of Architecture (2006)
This study aims to analyze and evaluate the influence of digital technologies on the inter-action of design and manufacturing processes by representing an outlook of digital tech-nologies through developments in modeling capabilities, manufacturing techniques, mate-rial science, and design strategies. The digital era reached by the technological developments in different fields of sci-ence influenced the field of architecture, just like the others. Thus, a new kind of spa-tial and tectonic quality in archit...
A different approach to evolutionary ethics: from biology to society
Aydın, Aysun; Sol, Ayhan; Department of Philosophy (2008)
In this thesis I analyze the evolutionary ethics and propose a new perspective that develops on the notion of altruism. The view of evolutionary ethics, especially the sociobiological account, has some problems. The most important philosophical problem is the “is-ought” problem which refers to the question as to whether moral propositions can be inferred from factual statements. In order to overcome this problem I suggest a different reading of the notion of altruism namely “altruistic behavior practice” th...
The dialogue of type and model in architecture
Tunçbaş, Adil; Cengizkan, Ali; Department of Architecture (2006)
The idea of type has always been a crucial factor in the field of architecture. Not only it works as a dominator in the design process of architecture but also it supplies the certain ways through which architecture communicates with the observer. In order to understand the interaction between architecture and the observer the idea of type appears as a critical point. This study will be an attempt to understand the dialogue of type and model in architecture. Throughout the research Anthony Vidler’s article ...
The Ideal Of Handicrafts and the Modern Design Formation: Coincidences and Failures
Tsoumas, Johannis (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2013-12-1)
Bu araştırma günümüzde modern tasarım olarak adlandırılan kavramın el sanatları kavramıyla yakından ilişkisini incelemektedir. Esas amacı, yalnızca kuramsal olarak değil, aynı zamanda karanlık Orta Çağdan günümüze uzanan bir dizi anahtar tarihsel örnekten hareket ederek el sanatlarının, Batı toplumlarında başarıya ulaşan endüstriyel tasarımın temelini oluşturduğunu göstermektir. Bu göz ardı edilemeyecek ilişkinin gelişimindeki önemli dönüm noktası 19. yüzyıl İngiltere’sidir. Çünkü bu dönem Sanayi Devrimi’ni...
A research on the possibility of distinguishing kitsch and art using philosophical hermeneutics
Kaya, Devrim; Ergüden, Akın; Department of Philosophy (2004)
This thesis tries to distinguish kitsch and art with the help of philosophical hermeneutics by reading it in the light of Derrida̕s interpretation of Hamlet in Specters of Marx. It defines kitsch as experience in order to go beyond both of the two main approaches, namely, the one that sees kitsch as an object and the one that reduces it to the behaviour of the subject. It tries to show that kitsch is not just an aesthetic problem, but also, a political one.
