The present study investigated the effectiveness of rice husk biochar (RHB) and chicken manure compost (CMC) amendments (T1: Control, T2: 2% RHB, T3: 2% CMC, T4: 1% RHB + 1% CMC) on the potential mobility of heavy metals (HMs) and the growth of maize plants in contaminated soil. Results indicated that the potential mobile fraction of Cr (44.43%), Ni (29.93%), and Zn (44.68%) accounted for T2, whereas Cu (69.33%) and Pb (34.38%) for T4 of their total amount. Amending the soil resulted in a significant increase in maize growth and biomass production, whereas T4 showed an increment of 156% in fresh maize weight. While root biomass was highest with T2 treatment, which increased fresh and dry weight by 35% and 90%. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) and Translocation factor (TF) were less than one indicating that the low content of HMs accumulation in roots from soil and slight transferred to shoot (edible tissues). The results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) revealed the generation of hydroxyl radical (•OH) as reactive oxygen species (ROS) in root and shoot of maize seedling. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum confirmed the complexation and the adsorption of HMs as prominent mechanisms owing to their complexation with hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl groups. The results indicate that the RHB and CMC, especially their combination can be used effectively for the remediation of HMs by reducing their toxicity and bioavailability in food matrices and soils.

Effectiveness of anaerobic biomass in adsorbing heavy metals
Haytoglu, B; Demirer, Göksel Niyazi; Yetiş, Ülkü (2001-01-01)
This study focuses on the effectiveness of waste anaerobic dead biomass (AIDE) in adsorbing heavy metals, namely Pb(II), Cr(VI), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II). The metal uptake capacity of ADB was investigated and compared with the values for various biomass types from the literature. The biomass, which was grown under laboratory conditions using a synthetic wastewater, was used throughout the study after sterilization. The maximum metal adsorptive capacities were evaluated by running isotherm tests at 25 degre...
Effect of feeding time on the performance of a sequencing batch reactor treating a mixture of 4-CP and 2,4-DCP
ŞAHİNKAYA, Erkan; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (Elsevier BV, 2007-06-01)
This paper investigated the biodegradation kinetics of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) separately in batch reactors and mixed in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Batch reactor experiments showed that both 4-CP and 2,4-DCP began to inhibit their own degradation at 53 and 25 mgl(-1), respectively, and that the Haldane equation gave a good fit to the experimental data because r(2) values were higher than 0.98. The maximum specific degradation rates (q(m)) were 130.3 and 112.4 mg g(-1) h...
Effect of biogenic substrate concentration on 4-chlorophenol degradation kinetics in sequencing batch reactors with instantaneous feed
ŞAHİNKAYA, Erkan; Dilek, Filiz Bengü (Elsevier BV, 2006-09-01)
Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) instantaneously fed with 200mg/l 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) were operated at different feed peptone concentrations to investigate the effect of biogenic substrate (peptone) concentrations on reactor performance, yield coefficient (Y) and 4-CP degradation kinetics. One of the reactors was operated at 10 days of sludge retention time (SRT) and the other was operated at 20 days of SRT. High chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiencies (90-95%) and complete 4-CP removals (de...
Zamana bağlı sorpsiyon sitelerinin optimum pompaj ve arıtım tasarımı üzerindeki etkileri
Güngör Demirci, Gamze; Aksoy, Ayşegül (2012-01-01)
Kirlenmiş sahalarda kirleticilerin toprağa tutunmuş halde bulunabilmesi ve suya çözünmenin yavaş olması, pompaj ve arıtım yöntemiyle temizleme tasarımını ve maliyetlerini etkileyebilir. Bu çalışmada, 1-f faktörünün optimum temizleme tasarımı ve maliyeti üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. f, zamana bağlı sorpsiyonu tanımlamak için sıklıkla kullanılan iki-siteli sorpsiyon modelinde yer alır ve 1-f zamana bağlı sorpsiyon sitelerinin oranını gösterir. Çalışmada benzetim-eniyileme yöntemi kullanılarak, 5 fa...
Improvement of enzymatic xylooligosaccharides production by the co-utilization of xylans from different origins
Kiran, Esra Uckun; AKPINAR, ÖZLEM; Bakir, Ufuk (Elsevier BV, 2013-10-01)
This study aimed to improve XOs production by enzymatic hydrolysis of xylans from various lignocellulosic waste biomasses namely corn cob, cotton and sunflower stalks, rice hull, wheat straw by using two commercial xylanase preparations, Shearzyme 500L and Veron 191. Shearzyme 500L showed better xylan hydrolysis capacity with high amount of xylose liberation. Xylobiose was the main hydrolysis product in each case. Even though the enzymatic hydrolyses using Shearzyme 500L resulted higher reducing sugar produ...
