Mechanical simulation of viscoelastic materials and assigning a viscoelastic material to the modeled parts in the simulations are difficult task. For the simulations, material model should be well chosen and material coefficients of the chosen models should be known. In order to obtain accurate simulations, hyperelastic characteristics of the viscoelastic materials should be investigated and hyperelastic model should be incorporated in the solutions. Material models and material model’s coefficients are chosen with the help of mechanical tests/experiments for these situations. The main goal of this thesis is to optimize material model’s coefficients by using an indenter test setup results and inverse finite element modeling. To achieve this, firstly by using a haptic device and other required equipments an indenter setup was prepared to test the materials mechanically. Inverse finite element modeling method is used in order to model the materials according to their viscoelastic and hyperelastic characteristics. The model obtained from analysis was optimized by using the results obtained from indenter setup according to experimental test data. By doing this, the correctness of the model chosen by inverse finite element modeling was proved for the tested material and material model coefficients were calculated correctly.

Finite element structural model updating by using experimental frequency response functions
Öztürk, Murat; Özgüven, Hasan Nevzat; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2009)
Initial forms of analytical models created to simulate real engineering structures may generally yield dynamic response predictions different than those obtained from experimental tests. Since testing a real structure under every possible excitation is not practical, it is essential to transform the initial mathematical model to a model which reflects the characteristics of the actual structure in a better way. By using structural model updating techniques, the initial mathematical model is adjusted so that...
Development of a shell finite element for large deformation analysis of laminated composites
Yıldız, Tuba; Darendeliler, Haluk; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2008)
The objective of the present work is to investigate the behavior of laminated fiber -reinforced polymer matrix composite shell structures under bending load with the help of a modified finite element computer code which was previously developed for the analysis of pseudo-layered single material shells. The laminates are assumed to be orthotropic and the formulation is adapted to first order shear deformation theory. The aim is to determine the large deformation characteristics numerically, and to predict th...
Singularity robust inverse dynamics of planar 2-RPR parallel manipulators
Ider, SK (SAGE Publications, 2004-07-01)
In planar parallel robots, limitations occur in the functional workspace because of interference of the legs with each other and because of drive singularities where the actuators lose control of the moving platform and the actuator forces grow without bounds. A 2-RPR (revolute, prismatic, revolute joints) planar parallel manipulator with two legs that minimizes the interference of the mechanical components is considered. Avoidance of the drive singularities is in general not desirable since it reduces the ...
Fully Coupled Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics-Finite Element Method Approach for Fluid-Structure Interaction Problems With Large Deflections
Dincer, A. Ersin; Demir, Abdullah; Bozkuş, Zafer; Tijsseling, Arris S. (ASME International, 2019-08-01)
In this study, a combination of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and finite element method (FEM) solving the complex problem of interaction between fluid with free surface and an elastic structure is studied. A brief description of SPH and FEM is presented. Contact mechanics is used for the coupling between fluid and structure, which are simulated with SPH and FEM, respectively. In the proposed method, to couple meshfree and mesh-based methods, fluid and structure are solved together by a complete ...
Mechanical fatique and life estimation analysis of printed circuit board components
Genç, Cem; Ünlüsoy, Yavuz Samim; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2006)
In this thesis, vibration induced fatigue life analysis of axial leaded Tantalum & Aluminum capacitors, PDIP and SM capacitors mounted on the printed circuit boards are performed. This approach requires the finite element model, material properties and dynamic characteristics of the PCB. The young modulus of the PCB material is obtained from 3 point bending tests, resonance frequencies are obtained from modal tests and transmissibility’s of the PCB are obtained from transmissibility tests which are used as ...
